Recently, the Catalysis Research Institute of Siberia branch of Russia has developed a new technology of preparing UHMWPE materials by non melting method.
The main purpose of developing UHMWPE material is to apply it to the extreme conditions in the Arctic region. The polymer material should withstand the low temperature of - 70-75 ℃. When the molecular weight of polyethylene exceeds 1 million, some unique properties will appear: high impact resistance, cold resistance, corrosion resistance, wear resistance and low friction coefficient. UHMWPE fiber also has excellent quality characteristics, its products are lighter than water, 1.5 times lighter than aramid fiber products. At present, the annual output of polyethylene in the world is about 100 million tons, of which the output of UHMWPE material is only 300000 tons (accounting for 0.3%), and only 17000 tons are processed into fiber. The reason for low yield is complex process and high consumption of resources and energy. First, we must dissolve the granules in boiling organic solvents to get the gel. The content of the material in the gel can be used to make the fiber less than 2-5%. Then drying and drawing will result in high energy consumption and high product cost.
The new catalyst developed by the Catalysis Research Institute of Siberia branch uses the non melting method to prepare UHMWPE material, which opens a new way to reduce the preparation cost of the product. The product can be applied to medical products, various textile products and materials for strengthening the take-off and landing tracks in cold areas.
